Tairoa Lodge is one of the oldest remaining residences in the Hawera Township,
situated on four hectares of land. Built in 1875 by Isaac Bayly (a successful local Butcher), the
heart kauri timber in the house was barged down from Northland to New Plymouth and then
transported by bullock wagon to Hawera. The original kitchen in the house was the
butchery until 1903 when Isaac Bayly sold his very grand home to the Lovell family (local florists).
The house remained in the family for 92 years until we purchased it in late 1997. Pat
Lovell was born here and spent her child hood living in this house. She then married
Jack Blyth and together they brought up their family of four here and developed
a very successful florist and horticulture business.
Our intent at purchase was to restore this beautiful Victorian Villa to its original beauty
and character and open our home to guests. The major restoration work has included building
the verandah, bay window off the sitting room and balcony from the upstairs master bedroom.
An original photo showed us that this was the style that Isaac Bayly had built in 1875.
Other renovations have included repiling, electrical rewiring and plumbing, replacing scrim
with gib board, rejuvenating the original kauri floorboards, resurrecting the existing
pool and working on the wonderful established grounds.

Breakfasts and dinner are served in this elegant dining room. The rich red of the wallpaper gives warmth to the room on a cold winters night. Two sets of french doors open out onto the verandah, which make it an ideal room for inside and outside entertaining, barbeques in summer, alfresco breakfasts on the verandah and taking advantage of the long summer evenings. The fireplace in this room is original black marble and has an intricate painted floral surround.

The Isaac Bayly Suite
The upstairs master bedroom named after Isaac Bayly who built this house in 1875 is opulently

bedstead stands proud in this room with the queen bed fitted with quality linen and electric

travelling as a twin. The light fittings are white rose painted china and brass and match
the décor beautifully. An antique washstand with basin and pitcher stand in one corner
along with a wooden chest, chairs and coffee table next to the fireplace.
Wonderful views of the woodland garden, swimming pool and petanque piste are found from the
private balcony off this bedroom. Enjoy your breakfast here during summer or pass the afternoon
away sipping a glass of wine and enjoying the summer evenings.

We needed somewhere close to stay for our Honeymoon, in case our 14-month-old baby couldn't
cope without Mum and Dad. Having seen an advertisement for Tairoa Lodge in the local paper we
made some enquiries and decided to book for the "Romance Package" as it sounded ideal. Ideal
soon became an inadequate description; although we were only 1km from home we could have been a
world away, the bush-clad grounds removing all clues to the proximity to town. From the moment
we arrived, until our reluctant checkout, the service we
|
received was excellent, as was the accommodation and the "champagne breakfast". All our requirements for a romantic honeymoon were
met (and in most cases far exceeded) and we thoroughly recommend Tairoa Lodge for any occasion.
We will most certainly be returning.

Tairoa Lodge is a "home away from home". Steve & Linda are wonderful hosts and nothing is too
much trouble. I stay in hotels and motels across Australasia and Tairoa Lodge rates amongst the
'5 star' ones. It is the most comfortable B&B I have stayed in, in New Zealand. The food and
comfort and the hospitality of Steve & Linda make you feel like being at home.
